A graduate of both the Pentecostal Theological Seminary and Lee University, Tommy, alongside his wife Poppi, have served as missionaries to “Indonesia & Beyond” from their Jakarta base since 1983.

Tommy recalls three events impacting his life: “My first call came during childhood—the call to accept Christ as personal savior.  Then at age sixteen, God called me to preach the Gospel.  Later, in college, He called me to be a missionary, and specifically to serve Him in Indonesia.”

Fluent in the Indonesian national language, and with a spiritual gifting in evangelism, Tommy regularly preaches multiple Sunday services across the islands of Indonesia. He also regularly speaks at churches in Hong Kong, Singapore and Malaysia, and often serves as pulpit translator in international religious meetings and conferences.

Being a native of Savannah, Georgia, Tommy is an avid Atlanta Braves baseball fan and can often be found watching them play whenever he gets the chance. Tommy and Poppi Smith have two sons, and one daughter-in-law.

Poppi Smith

Having an education degree with an emphasis on teaching English as a second language, Poppi has devoted many years teaching English to future church leaders at the Bethel Seminary and to underprivileged grade school children in poverty stricken areas of Indonesia.

Poppi combines her passions of cooking and education, as she prepares needy Indonesian children for a future and a hope in Jesus Christ, through various ministry endeavors which collaborate both food and scholarship. Gifted in administration, logistics, and event planning, Poppi organizes ten weekly feeding programs to benefit impoverished children, in addition to her annual Children's Christmas Celebration. Approximately thirty thousand children attend these ministries every year! Not coincidentally, many of these children are also Poppi's students.

An Indonesian national from Jakarta, Poppi comes from a big family - number twelve of thirteen! When not cooking, Poppi is usually busy with her garden or collecting decorations for Christmas. Poppi is married to Tommy Smith, with whom she shares two sons and one daughter-in-law.
